The teachers need to give attention to the students product oriented task to avoid misconceptions on the outcome that is based on the criteria and on what particular skills and competencies the students must employ. We need to assess them to provide the necessary feedback and coaching for the students, also to track the student’s growth and progress.

3.       In what conditions can the product-oriented performance assessment be need more appropriately?
The product oriented performance assessment is needed on every task which requires the student’s skills and competencies to enhance and improve their capabilities in real world setting.

Reflections

Write your reflection of thoughts, feelings, personal learning strategies, insights or new understanding from your experience in using authentic assessment. Then share your reflection with your FS teacher and classmates. Also draw some insights from your classmates’ sharing.
After answering all the questions in this field study I realized that as a future teacher we should be more observant and give more attention to our pupils/students because all of them have a different characteristics and capabilities that we should enhance through the use of different methods, strategies and assessment tools. Also, after answering this field study I understand how a teacher should be in dealing his/her pupils. And through this I have learned many things that I can use when I am already in the field of teaching. That in giving assessment is a task that we need to think and examine carefully and we should based it on the learners and the learning objectives for it to be successfully done.

After accomplishing this field study, I’ve learned that as a future teacher someday, we should provide the necessary scaffolding for the students, and communicate with them the learning objectives for them to be guided and for them to achieve and develop their skill and capabilities.. We should plan carefully when we are assessing and evaluating them with the accompaniment of the scoring rubrics to avoid subjectivity and bias assessment. We must also consider the different strategies and assessment tools for the students to assess them appropriately and for them to cope-up in every lesson and topics, we must also bear in our minds that every child is unique in their own way so we as a future educator we must focus and commit ourselves on guiding them and on how we as a teacher can make difference on their lives.

What are the best features of my process-oriented performance assessment design?

The best features of my process oriented performance assessment design are that the task is aligned with my instructional objectives, the skills and competencies are clearly stated to the student for them to be guided.

What specific conditions are necessary for a successful use of my process-oriented performance assessment design?

The specific conditions that are necessary is that the instruction  must be well explained or discussed to the students before engaging the students to this activity and also with the accompany of rubrics  that helps us on giving the standard , accurate , and fair assessment in evaluating the students performances.

What basic points should the user of this design consider?

The basic points the user of this design is that this design is efficient and practical for the students with regards on their skills and performances on the on-going process of the activities.

ANALYSIS
1.  Why do teachers need to give attention to the students’ process-oriented tasks? Why do they need to assess them?
Teachers need to give attention to the students, provide the necessary scaffolding so that when the students will perform the task they will be guided, it is also important to communicate with them to avoid miscommunication on what specifically task you are requiring with them. We need to assess them with accompany of rubrics so that we are able to make decision and judgements for them based on their skills and performances.
2.  In what conditions can the process-oriented performance assessment be used appropriately?
Process oriented performance can be used appropriately by employing performance-based assessment which is directly observable trough demonstrating the process or steps as they occur ant the competencies involved when the performance is on-going which is then evaluated and judged by the teachers.

Reflection
Make reflections on your feelings and thoughts about the observations made in this FS.
Our resource teacher is very approachable he gives time for us when we need to ask some questions regarding to our field study even though he is busy, I admire most is whenever he gives the performance activity he does and demonstrate the activity, for the students to be guided on what specific task they are required to do, he also communicate to the students the learning task and criteria to be accomplish by them, to avoid misconception with the students
As a future educator, assessing the students with the performance based assessment, first, it is a must that you have to construct or design a your plan and objectives also the task and competencies that the students must achieved and also by communicating with them the rubrics and criteria in evaluating them so that they know what they are going to do.

Analysis

1.       Was there a variety of assessment methods used by the teacher? How relevant was/were the assessment method/s used?

Yes, there is a variety of assessment methods that is used by the teacher such as performance based assessment, pencil and paper test (essays, quizzes) and oral strategy(oral recitation). These assessment methods are relevant most specially the performance based assessment because of their field of specialization which is Technology and Livelihood Education which has different shops that requires skill and performance, the assessment methods are also relevant because they are based and aligned from the instructional objectives.

2.       Do you think the expected students’ learning behaviors indicated in the objectives were properly and appropriately assessed through those assessment methods?

Yes , because every assessment methods has different tasks to achieve the expected learning behaviors for the students, these assessment methods has different qualities to assess the students for making decisions and judgments that is suited for every learners .

Reflections

As we observe the class , the teacher discuss and delivers his lesson very well, he makes the class discussion always alive by inserting some jokes that is related to the lesson. I have learned that as a teacher you must always consider a healthy psychological climate in the class , a good and effective communication with the learners  and also assuring that the students had learn and understand the lessons by using assessment methods that is appropriate for the learners. These assessment methods must be aligned with the instructional objectives that can be attained by the students.

LOG ME

NAME OF FS STUDENT: JOSEPHINE M. GASPAr
COURSE:       BSE 3-A
RESOURCE TEACHER: MR. MARCELO G. SIMON
COOPERATING SCHOOL: ISABELA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

My Target

At the end of this activity, you will be informed on the principles of authentic assessment and its usefulness in the classroom.

My Task

Authentic assessment is an alternative way of assessing students’ learning to be able to use it, you must have a deep understanding of it. To help you reach your goal, do the following task:
1.       Visit a classroom and interview the teacher on his/her experiences in using authentic assessment.
2.       Describe how the teacher uses the authentic assessment.
3.       Write a reflective journal on the activity.

My Tools

For this learning activity, please document the information gathered from the interview with the teacher on authentic assessment. Write your documentation using the activity form provided for you.

MY INTERVIEW NOTES

Students Interview with the Teacher
Student: Good morning Sir!
Teacher: Good morning too, what can I do for you?
Student: Sir may I have a short interview
Teacher: Okay. Please take your sit first. What do you want to know from me?
Student: Thank you sir, may I know sir your complete name and the subject your                    teaching?
Teacher: My name is Marcelo Simon, and I am teaching T.L.E. (Agriculture) subject Grade 7 students.
Student: Great sir. How many years you are in service sir and what are those               different methods used in recording your student’s progress?
Teacher: This is actually my 32nd  year of teaching in this institution and I am using         a
Class record, checklist as a guideline listing skills, behaviors, or characteristics to          record my observations of students as they perform certain tasks. There are also student checklists used by students for self-assessment purposes.
Student:  Do you have a time saving tips in checking your student’s papers?
Teacher: For me, I usually check the papers during my free time in school so that I would        not be bothered to do other things when I am at home or outside the campus.              Sometimes we check the papers just after the recorded activities.
Student: Sir, how do you score the papers, projects and other written assignment? Do you have certain procedures?
Teacher: I am scoring their output depends on what kind of assessment that I used. For instance, I gave them a quiz and mostly a set of objectives and an essay so in objective, it is easy because you have just to count how many correct answer they got but in essay or any other written assessment in form of paragraph, I am using a certain criteria to make it fair.
Student: Sir, when do you conduct the test and how do you the results filed?
Teacher: In here, we are giving the test quarterly. Of course, we do checking and recording but we let the students see their papers and return it to us for our file. If in case a problem will occur with our students, we have evidence, so the parents of the learners are open to see also the record of their child.
Student: How can a variety of assessment strategies co-exist in one classroom? What do students need to before a teacher uses various assessment strategies?
Teacher: I my case as a T.L.E. teacher, I need to assess the learners in their verbal and non- verbal performance. So I am using a variety of activities inside the classroom and the important things the students should know are what would be the use of these assessments in their subject? How do the assessments help in their improvement?
Student: Sir, what are the benefits of using authentic assessment and what are the challenges have you met with it?
Teacher: There are many benefits of authentic, it resemble reading and writing in the real world and in school; students are learning and practicing how to apply important knowledge and skills for authentic purposes and for us teachers, it guarantees that we are concentrating on worthwhile skills and strategies. The most important challenge for me is how can I inculcate authentic assessment within the individual differences of the learners?

Student: Okay sir, thank you very much for the information and giving your time to me. God bless!

Analysis

1.       What is Authentic Assessment?

Authentic assessment focuses on students application of knowledge and skills in real life setting, it involves direct examination of students ability to use knowledge that is likened to what is encountered in real life setting, it moves beyond learning by rote and memorization of traditional methods and allows student to construct response, it also captures aspect of students knowledge ,understanding, problem-solving skills, social skills and attitudes that are used in real world or a simulation of a real world situation. Authentic assessment s set a meaningful and engaging task in rich context, where the learning applies knowledge and skills and performs the task in a new situation. Authentic task helps students rehearse for the complex ambiguities of adult and professional life.

2.       How was authentic assessment used? Was it used to measure learning through the product?

Yes. Authentic assessment is used to measure learning trough the product it is used to provide realistic context that can make problems more engaging for students, it is used to measure learning trough the product because product oriented task requires the student to employ the behavioural domains which is the cognitive, affective and the psycho-motor. These product oriented assessments with regards to authentic assessment require the use of complex procedural skills and techniques for generating products that will be created by the students.

Reflection

What are your insights and feelings about the use of authentic assessment?
Incorporating  authentic assessment in assessing students is an alternative way to assess the students performances, for me it is the best way to assess the students learning competencies and skills of students for they are exposed in real context setting, therefore they as every individual can solve problems that are encountered in real life . Engaging real life learning from the learners perspective is engaging, self directed and meaningful to the students.

Describe how the teacher used the authentic assessment?

Our resource teacher used authentic assessment for evaluating the skills and competencies of students he establishes activities that is aligned with the instructional objectives such as performance based activities and let the students to discover and learn, for example is the teacher let the students to design and build their own example of vegetable garden in the schools simple backyard and the yields are being sold to the market. The profit is being shared by the other group mates. This strategy of the teacher will also develop the student’s entrepreneurial abilities which will be their guide in real life application to have an additional income and allowances.

How did you feel about the teachers experience in the use of authentic assessment?

I appreciate the way our resource teacher use of authentic assessment because he totally engage and commits his self in planning employing authentic assessment for the benefits and progress of students skills and competencies.

What could be the gains of the students and teachers in using authentic assessment?

The gains of the students in using authentic assessments is that they are exposed in real life context that will provide learning experiences for them to be knowledge producers, knowledge users, and socially responsible citizens .
In the part of the teacher the results of authentic assessment will be their guide and data in evaluating the student’s performance and abilities. Also to improve their instructional plan and strategies so that the students can easily achieve the targeted outcomes and competencies and for more holistic approaches in evaluating students.

Which part of the teacher’s use of authentic assessment do you feel like improving or revising?
For me there is nothing to revise but to improve his use of authentic assessment for the benefit of the students and for him to measure the learning extent of the students
